For me Theva Residence is a truly beautiful place that has allowed me to take in the beauty of Kandy with its spectacular views, friendly staff and amazing service. I have loved my time here. As the rickety tuktuk rickshaw came to a halt at the sleek gates of the Theva Residency, I couldn’t help but hope for a blissful retreat from the chaotic clutter of the streets of Sri Lanka.
It was about a 10 minute mountain ride from the center of Kandy until we arrived.
I was immediately greeted by the friendly Theva staff and ushered away to my room on the bottom floor of the neatly designed boutique hotel.

Just after taking off my dusty shoes and refreshing my face with a splash of cool water, a waiter came to my door bearing a cold blended tropical fruit smoothie. I was delighted.
Though the blistering rays of the midday Sri Lankan sun were harsh, Theva Residency provided a true retreat of escape in the higher elevation of Kandy’s foothills.

Located in Kandy, long a center of the Buddhist faith, the stunning 17th-century Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) is believed to house the left upper canine tooth of the Lord Buddha himself. This precious relic attracts white-clad pilgrims, bearing lotus blossoms and frangipani, every day.
History
According to legend, the tooth was taken from the Buddha as he lay on his funeral pyre. It was smuggled to Sri Lanka in 313 AD, hidden in the hair of Princess Hemamali who fled the Hindu armies besieging her father's kingdom in India.
It immediately became an object of great reverence and was enshrined in a series of nested jeweled reliquaries. The tooth was brought out for special occasions and paraded on the backs of elephants, which are sacred to the Buddha. where it survived numerous attempts to capture and destroy it.
